Understanding PEMF Therapy
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses low-frequency electromagnetic pulses
to support the body's natural healing processes. Originally developed to accelerate bone fracture healing, PEMF has been
studied for over three decades across a wide range of health conditions from chronic pain and arthritis to stress recovery
and tissue repair.
How Does PEMF Work?
PEMF devices deliver gentle electromagnetic pulses that penetrate deep into tissues. At the cellular level, these pulses have been shown to:
- Reduce inflammation by suppressing key inflammatory pathways (NF-κB) and lowering pro-inflammatory molecules like TNF-α and IL-6
- Enhance antioxidant defenses by increasing protective enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and thioredoxin
- Support mitochondrial function and cellular energy production through activation of PGC-1α
- Promote a shift toward parasympathetic (rest-and-recover) nervous system activity, as measured by heart rate variability studies
- At low intensities, support adaptive stress responses and neuroprotective pathways in the brain, including increased expression of factors involved in
neuroplasticity
What Does the Research Say?
The strongest clinical evidence for PEMF exists in the management of osteoarthritis pain. Multiple meta-analyses of randomized, placebo-controlled trials have demonstrated significant reductions in pain scores and improvements in joint function. A 2020 meta-analysis of 15 trials found a large effect on pain relief, and a 2024 systematic review of 17 trials reported a 60% decrease in pain scores and 42% improvement in joint function measures.
PEMF has also shown promise for:
- Chronic low back pain — a meta-analysis of 14 trials found significant pain reduction compared to placebo
- Shoulder impingement — a meta-analysis of 4 trials found meaningful improvements in pain and function
- Delayed bone healing — PEMF has been used successfully in over 250,000 patients worldwide with non-healing fractures
- Stress recovery — studies show PEMF can accelerate autonomic nervous system recovery after physical stress and, at appropriate intensities, may support the body's adaptive stress response
The Importance of Parameters
Research consistently shows that the therapeutic effects of PEMF depend on the specific settings used including frequency, intensity, and duration of treatment. Lower-intensity exposures tend to promote adaptive, healing responses, while excessively high intensities may have diminishing or even counterproductive effects. This is why working with a knowledgeable provider to select appropriate PEMF protocols is important.
Safety
PEMF therapy has an excellent safety profile. Across dozens of clinical trials and systematic reviews, no serious adverse events have been reported. Some patients may experience temporary warmth, mild tingling, or a brief increase in symptoms as blood flow increases to the treated area. PEMF should be used with caution in patients with pacemakers, active bleeding disorders, or who are on anticoagulant therapy. Patients with cardiovascular conditions or diabetes should discuss PEMF with their provider, as it may transiently affect blood pressure, heart rate, or blood sugar levels.
Our Approach
We offer PEMF therapy as a complementary treatment option alongside evidence-based conventional care. PEMF is not a replacement for physical therapy, exercise, or medical management it is a tool that may enhance recovery and comfort when used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
What to Expect During your Session
- You will sit or lie comfortably on the PEMF mat on a massage table in a dark, quiet room with or without aromatherapy (your choice)
- Sessions typically last 15–30 minutes
- Most people feel a gentle warmth or mild tingling, many feel nothing at all
- There is no pain involved
- You can return to your normal activities immediately after treatment
Is It Safe?
PEMF therapy has been studied in dozens of clinical trials and has an excellent safety record. No serious side effects have been reported. Some people may notice:
- Temporary warmth in the treated area
- A brief, mild increase in symptoms before improvement (this is normal and usually resolves quickly)
- Mild fatigue after the first few sessions
Pricing: 15 minutes- $25
30 minutes- $40
(GET will be added to price of session)
